Customizing a GIS software program requires both an intimate knowledge of the end-result, or application, to which the system will be put, and sound principals of software design. Since GIS software development has tended to originate in the natural and engineering sciences, rather that in the computer sciences, the tools available today represent a curious history. Having successfully designed custom software solutions which have tied together as many as nine software packages at a time, I specialize in designing customized GIS systems.
- Conceptual Design
- Participated in, or managed, conceptual system designs at two mining companies, a nuclear repository, and two county governments.
- System Mock-up
- Performed system mock-ups at two mining companies and a nuclear repository.
- Flow Charting
- Charted in detail the software and data flows at a mining company and a nuclear repository.
- Rapid Prototyping
- Created rapid application prototypes at a mining company, and engineering company, and a nuclear repository.
- Code Module Design
- Wrote the code module design at a mining company and a nuclear repository.
- Pseudo Coding
- Pseudo-coded software development projects at two mining companies, a nuclear repository, a mapping company, and an engineering company.
- Software Evaluation
- Evaluated GIS software selection at a railway company, a county government, and an engineering company.
- Manual Design
- Designed or wrote a dozen technical software manuals.
- Help File Design
- Designed or wrote five on-line help file systems.
